Tu Kab Khao sits inside a 110-year-old Sino-Portuguese building on Krabi Road, and the food matches the architecture — traditional, meticulous, and unmistakably Phuket. It earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand listing in 2018 and has held it every year since, which tells you two things: the food is excellent, and the prices are still reasonable.
The Food
The menu is deep — over 80 dishes — but the highlights are the ones that trace back to Phuket’s Hokkien, Peranakan, and southern Thai roots:
- Moo hong — slow-braised pork belly in soy, star anise, and pepper. This is Phuket’s soul dish, and Tu Kab Khao’s version is tender, deeply savoury, and not too sweet.
- Oh ao — a glutinous rice and prawn dish wrapped in banana leaf, almost impossible to find outside old Phuket families.
- Lobster salad with local herbs — fresh, peppery, and beautifully plated.
- Khanom jeen nam ya kati — fermented rice noodles with a rich, coconut-heavy fish curry sauce.
The Setting
The ground floor is open-air, looking onto a small courtyard. The upper floor is air-conditioned and filled with antique furniture — wooden cabinets, ceramic vases, and old family photographs that give the space a living-room warmth. It is the kind of place where you instinctively lower your voice.
